چکیده
In this study, the contributions of light scattering and extra-loss mechanisms to total losses differential mode attenuation guided modes are quantified for three different few-mode fibers. The tested fibers have same modal content but refractive index profiles, namely step, trapezoidal parabolic. It is demonstrated that a profile good compromise between low attenuation, while maintaining large effective differences so as reduce coupling.

Rayleigh scattering in few-mode optical fibers
The extremely low loss of silica fibers has enabled the telecommunication revolution, but single-mode fiber-optic communication systems have been driven to their capacity limits. As a means to overcome this capacity crunch, space-division multiplexing (SDM) using few-mode fibers (FMF) has been proposed and demonstrated. In single-mode optical fibers, Rayleigh scattering serves as the dominant m...

Using multimode fibers for long-haul transmission is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. In particular few-mode fibers (FMFs) are demonstrated as a good compromise since they are sufficiently resistant to mode coupling compared to standard multimode fibers but they still can have large core diameters compared to single-mode fibers. As a result these fibers can have significantly less nonl...
متن کاملComprehensive Theoretical Study on Threshold Power of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in Single-Mode Fibers
We have investigated and developed a theoretical approach to explore stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) phenomena in single mode fiber. SBS happening threshold power condition has been studied in terms of fiber parameters and input pump power. To assess threshold power precisely, the pump depletion effect and fiber loss has been included by employing 1% criterion. The threshold exponential g...
متن کاملLight scattering described in the mode picture.
A system of orthonormal functions representing the eigenmodes of an optical resonator with perfectly spherical mirror surfaces has been described in the literature. In real experiments, however, the wave front of the passing beam will be deformed by surface irregularities or index inhomogeneities inside components traversed by the beam. We describe quantitatively the relative power transferred ...
متن کاملTheory of intermodal four-wave mixing with random linear mode coupling in few-mode fibers.
We study intermodal four-wave mixing (FWM) in few-mode fibers in the presence of birefringence fluctuations and random linear mode coupling. Two different intermodal FWM processes are investigated by including all nonlinear contributions to the phase-matching condition and FWM bandwidth. We find that one of the FWM processes has a much larger bandwidth than the other. We include random linear m...
